Intel Malaysia has always been proud of its achievements in the computing space, and rightly so — its Malaysia Design Center (MDC) has been responsible for many innovations over the years. The chipmaker established its first base outside of the US in 1972, right here in Penang. That’s 44 years ago. Since then, Intel in Penang has grown to be one of the largest technology design and development facilities in the world. Intel’s Malaysia Design Center opened 25 years ago (sometime in 1991), in Penang. To celebrate its 25th anniversary here in Malaysia, Intel has whipped up an infographic showing five of the many innovations that were designed by Malaysians at MDC.

One of the more recent ones is the Intel Compute Stick, a computer the size of a pack of gum, that turns a dumb display/monitor/screen into a full-fledged PC. Next up is the four-by-four-inch Intel NUC Board or the more complete NUC Kit which is just like the Compute Stick — a mini PC — but it is also scalable and can fit in a set-top box-like enclosure. Following that in the list, is MDC’s successful tape-out of its first purpose-built low-cost Intel SoC codenamed Intel Atom “Pineview”. It is said to achieve seven manufacturing records before it was even launched in 2009. MDC was also attributed to the design of Universal Serial Bus (USB) 1.0 — the micro-controller that started it all. The final item in this list is Intel IoT Gateway, a device and sensor management application to deliver an end-to-end ‘Internet of Things’ solution. Intel said some of its IoT solutions have been applied in agriculture, hospitality, asset tracking, and industrial automation industries.
