Update (October 8th 2014): Corrected info about Core M dethroning Core i7 and TDP
Intel Malaysia organised an event here to introduce the latest processor that will be shipping with some of the 2-in-1 devices, tablets and Ultrabooks soon. The new Core M processor is will take its place as the new king of Core processors above the Core i7, which makes it a premium offering. Intel Core M is a premium processor and is said to be able to deliver a superior performance while at the same time, provide an excellent battery life., befitting its new place on the throne. The processor is also Intel’s most energy-efficient Core processor as it only requires 4.5 watts of power with a TDP of only 4.5 watts.
The Core M’s power dissipation and usage make it ideal for thin and light devices. The chip will also brings forth a new generation of device designs that would not need cooling fans, which in turn would eliminate the need for extra parts as well as reducing the overall power usage.
Listed below are some of the benefits that Intel claims to have achieved with the Core M:
- Faster performance and even more battery life: The processor has a 50% faster compute performance and 40% graphics performance when compared to the previous generation (4th) Intel Core processor. It can handle more than 8 hours of video play which comes to about 20% more than the previous generation.
- Allows for a thin and fanless design: The processor package is 50% smaller and the low power usage has the added benefit of having 60% lower thermal power.
- Conflict-free: The processor does not contain minerals (tin, tantalum, tungsten and/or gold) that directly/indirectly finance/benefit armed groups in the Democratic Republic of Congo or adjoining countries.
- Security: Processors such as the Core M-5Y70 come with Intel vPro technology that helps to protect or provide security for data, user identities, and network access.
- Next generation hardware: The Core M architecture supports high-quality audio, Intel Wireless Display 5.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi connection, and will be able to support wireless docking with WiGig from Intel.
The OEMs have already started working with the processor and some of the devices that the Core M will make an appearance in include Acer Aspire Switch 12; ASUS Zenbook UX305, Transformer Book T300FA, Transformer T300 Chi; Dell Latitude 13 7000 Series; HP ENVY x2; and Lenovo ThinkPad Helix. These devices are expected to arrive to the marketplace this year and continue on to the next.
